Roger Martin, himself a glaucoma patient, practices a unique style of grassroots activism in local communities to build awareness of glaucoma. He has traveled over 1.3 million miles to 47 states to help screen more than 160,000 people for glaucoma during the past 10 years.

Roger has presented at numerous
professional meetings; written more than 150 articles featured in publications such as Reader’s Digest, Ophthalmology Management, Review of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology Times, and Glaucoma Today; and made frequent television appearances. In 2004, he became the first non-ophthalmologist to receive the prestigious Community Service Award from the Roman-Barnes Society, the ophthalmology society of the National Medical Association. His contributions have also been recognized by many well-respected organizations including the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Glaucoma Society, the American Optometric Association, the Glaucoma Foundation, and the Glaucoma Research Foundation. Through his efforts, Roger hopes to teach people that early glaucoma diagnosis and care are the keys to preventing blindness.

Glaucoma screening events for eye care practices
Allergan offers an opportunity to conduct a glaucoma screening program in communities nationwide. This screening initiative is spearheaded by Roger Martin, a prominent glaucoma advocate and activist.

Combating glaucoma through early detection
The prevalence of glaucoma in the United States has reached approximately 4 million; however, only half are aware of their condition. Although glaucoma can lead to blindness, early detection can help preserve sight. Roger Martin routinely partners with eye care practices and institutions to conduct glaucoma screenings in dozens of communities each year.

Screening services offer practices or institutions:

  • Training on the value of screening in community outreach
  • Increased patient traffic and glaucoma awareness
  • Assistance in building a new screening program or enhancing one that already exists

The screening elements:

  • Each practice provides the screening staff
  • Screenings may be performed in convenient community facilities
  • All equipment, forms, and essentials for a turnkey screening
    are provided to participants
